STARworks Glass Installations
Reid Heart Center
In September of 2017, Starworks was approached by Ronald Whitely, project manager at Moore Regional Hospital about an opportunity to install a large sculpture in the entrance to their new Reid Heart Center building in Pinehurst, North Carolina. An initial meeting allowed Starworks artists to see the space and hear from the members of the Foundation of FirstHealth team including president Kathleen Stockham and generous funder of the Reid Heart Center, Betty Reid. The Starworks team delivered a proposal for the design including computer aided design drawings, a timeline and cost estimates at $42,000. A final design was agreed upon that incorporated blown glass elements referencing the funding family’s legacy as inventors of the blow-pop candy. After working with contractors from Sandhills Building Systems, the structural work needed to secure the sculpture was planned and in place. Installation of the sculpture was completed in March of 2017. The sculpture was completed on time and within the proposed budget.
Materials: Glass and Stainless Steel
Dimension: Approximately 18’H x 20’W x 32”D
Budget: $42,000
Spin, Weave Gather Nancy Callan Installation at the Mint Museum
In spring 2018, renowned glass artist Nancy Callan worked in the Starworks Glass Studio with our glass team to create pieces for her Spin, Weave, Gather installation at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. The installation was a year in the making and was inspired by North Carolina’s rich history of textile industry and design. Spin, Weave, Gather includes panels that reference the process of creating textiles (cotton bolls, skeins of yarn and whirling bobbins) as well as the finished products (ticking stripes, plaids and frayed fragments). Watch a video of the making of this installation below.
