Clay Records Human Gesture - Paper-Clay and Alternative Techniques Workshop

A workshop of alternative ways and experimental techniques to push the limits of clay through controlled defiance of gravity in order to create what may seem impossible to make forms with expressive textures. Come make your work out of easy to manipulate slabs and experiment the amazing properties of paper-clay mixtures. Paper-clay gives you the possibility to make thin or thick/solid and to attach bone dry work to each other; to fix cracks.

The workshop will incorporate alternative hand building and throwing techniques.

Manipulating paper clay slabs to render free flowing forms as ways to record your body's actions. The sculptures become landscapes of human gestures, memories of their making.

The artist will present unique ways of utilizing wild stoneware clays native to North Carolina in order to expand your work possibilities and methods.

 Approximate Outline of Activities

-Introduction; Power Point presentation with images of artist's work and talk about the process, ideas, and influences

-Demonstration: building forms in the attempt to overcome gravity, different techniques of building, attaching bone dry pieces, repair of bone-dry cracked work

-Hands-on part: participants will make utilitarian and non-utilitarian forms

Please bring sketches or maquettes of what may seem impossible ideas to create into clay. Participants are also encouraged to bring personal tools, slump or hump molds of forms intended to make. We will provide some basic tools, some basic slump and hump molds, aprons. We will also provide paper-clay in different working states: slurry, slabs and hand building clay.
