Using Molds to Begin a Conversation
Demonstration & Lecture
February 4, 10am
Survey of using slabs pressed into and around different types of molds: plaster, bisque, and found molds. Explore how molds are means to a beginning rather than an end. See examples of small hand held bowls to sculptural birds and large vessel forms. Discussions on developing ideas, firing techniques from ^3 - ^10, and shared perspectives on ceramic art.
Matt Kelleher is an associate professor of ceramics at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He joined the faculty in 2015, after a decade of working as a studio potter in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Matt has participated in residencies at Penland School of Crafts, Archie Bray Foundation, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, and Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. As Matt continues to investigate soda-fired tableware, his studio practice has expanded to include larger sculptural ideas.
