Forge Your Own Blacksmith Tools
Saturday, April 12 - 9am or 1pm
Students will be guided by Artist Blacksmith Ian Thomsen in using traditional techniques of fire, hammer, and anvil to create their own forging/blacksmithing tools. We will work through a complete pair of tongs start to finish as well as forge, finish , and heat treat, a tool steel punch , and chisel. Participants will learn basic forging techniques as well as fundamental metallurgy and hardening.
Must be 16 or older; no experience required. Protective gear will be provided, however students must wear cotton denim pants, long sleeves, and closed toed shoes/boots in order to participate. Instructors reserve the right to refuse participation if proper attire is not worn.
Cancellations must be made at least 7 days prior to class date. Cancellations made after that date may not be refunded.

About Your Instructor: Ian Thomsen
Ian Thomsen is an artist metalsmith working in Asheboro NC. He got his beginnings in blacksmithing through colonial reenacting as a child and has pursued the forging arts ever since. He produces everything from early American tools, to art nouveau and modern gates and railings. His hope is to honor the heritage, while embracing the future of American artisanal forging and ironwork. You can find Ian creating under the name Science Hill Ironworks (Asheboro, NC).
